Single Stream Recycling

I toured Greenstar Recycling in Des Moines today. They do the Single Stream recycling in Des Moines. Single Stream is when all the stuff you're recycling gets so very conveniently put together in one container.

At recycling processors, it's all about the markets. The recycler has places they sell their stuff to, and they prepare the materials how the buyers like it. Greenstar has sorters and equipment to help them get the material sorted into the piles they want so they can bail it. Our tour guide said they sell all their paper to Mexico where they make it back into newsprint.

Their customer - Metro Waste Authority in this case, gets a cut of their profits from selling the materials. You know me - I love seeing this kind of stuff. Here are the pics I took.

  • All the wrong stuff - sacks put in the recycle bin. Bad idea!
