Walt memories

Supercalafragalisticexpialadoshus. Walt Disney and I - we've got a thiiiing goin' on. Of course he's been dead for years...so it's a little creepy. But his film studio is alive - and so am I. I put some new music on my iPod last night - Disney tunes. They made my think about my history with Walt.
Walt Disney

I've loved Disney films and the Wonderful World of Disney show since I was little. Who can forget "Davey, Davey Crockett King of the Wild Frontier", the Ballad of Davey Crockett. I dreamed of going to Disney World in California someday.
Moochie
Sammy the Seal (I loved the animal shows of course)
The Castaways
How the West Was Won
Mickey (of course)
Babes In Toyland
Mary Poppins

As I grew up, I threw off my Walt ways and went on to "groovier" movies. Ones with titles like Carry On Camping and Pink Panther.

Amy and Mrs. Potts
Then I had children. My life came full circle. My first real conversation with Amy was about the movie Sleeping Beauty. She didn't understand why the girl touched the spindle - I remember laying on the bed with her and have a deep conversation about it. "Why did she touch it?" she kept asking. I was in awe - Amy was turning into a little person I could talk to!

Her first Disney movie was Bambi. Amy was pretty young for a movie - only two because I was pregnant with Jud. She really didn't understand it but was good. I was full of pregnancy emotions and got all blubbery over the loss of Bambi's mom. Oh wait...I still do that. Of course Paul was heartless - he wanted to know how many points Bambi's dad had...

We took Amy to see the Disney movie the Little Mermaid at the Creston theater when she was 3. I'm not sure what we did with Jud - must have gotten a sitter. She liked it - she sat on my lap part of the time. The music from that movie is really good. We were with the Ritzmans and sat with Mendy and Jeremy. The end of the movie is very dramatic and got to be a bit much for Amy so we had to escape from the theater a little early. #sobbingdramatically

VHS tapes were big during that time period. We purchased many of the Disney movies when they were on sale.  Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Pocahontas - plus all the old ones they came out with Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella (no not you Katie McKim). There are too many to list.

I miss seeing Disney flicks - our VCR is downstairs and I don't even know if it works...just like watching Looney Tunes, watching Walt's movies is very relaxing. Good stuff.

Disney

I keep seeing the Disney commercials on TV - the ones with the kids who find out they're going to Disney World. Betsy and I got to go with Mom and Dad when I was about 15. I remember Dad pushing me around with his hand on my neck. Space Mountain was closed for repairs, or cleaning or something.

Amy was 13 and Jud 10 when we went. We stayed at that Sports place connected right to Disney. There was a pool and a foamy football field right there, and you could ride a shuttle to the park each day. We hit all the hot spots - Wild Kingdom, Epcot, Magic Kingdon. Amy and Jud were the perfect age - they could go on all the rides.

Well Jud wasn't always the perfect age - he got a little crabby the last day, causing me to melt down when he shoved an old person in Canada, the video at Epcot. Still, all was forgiven when he finally saw Donald Duck (in a serape and sombrero no less).

The laser show was very cool. We went on Tower of Terror several times as there was no line. Dad and Pat2 came up and visited for a day - it was the year after they got married. The 3D stuff was cool. I was glad we didn't have tiny little kids with us.

Oh and Space Mountain was closed for repairs.

I'm a ramblin' gal

Fess Parker was Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter!
Which reminds me of the discussion in Tom Anderson's cubicle, which is adjacent just west of mine in the Wallace Building in the Big City of DM. The convo involved two guys - around my age, talking about TV shows of our youth.

To further digress, this discussion stemmed from a phone call another woman (Linda) in our department got from her mom, who is a widow who lives on the outskirts of DM. Early yesterday a.m. just outside her house a coon was moving babies around, and it was freaking her out. Linda to the rescue! Which caused Tom to say, "if I only remembered the words to the Davy Crockett song" to sing to you. Which caused me to get that tune in my head.

So the conversation about TV shows followed that. The other participant in the cubicle chat, Rodney, it seems only got one TV station where he lived in West Virginia - so he watched Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom and the Walt Disney Show on Sunday nights. It's a shame he didn't get Bonanza!

We discussed how we loved those Walt Disney movies - Three Lives of Davy Crockett, Thomasina, Big Red, Old Yeller, That Darn Cat, Babes in Toyland and Monkey's Uncle are a few. Plus those nature stories with the wonderful narrator with a voice that sounding like he was talking just to me, like a kindly uncle. We watched each episode over and over. Because we didn't have options - or ADD like today's kids seem to.
I was thinking about this stuff during my road trip today - from Des Moines to Fort Madison, with a brief stop (only time to purchase a belt and 2 basic Tees) at the Williamsburg outlet mall. It was a beautiful day for a trip, and I'm driving the state's Honda Hybrid. I've used only 1/2 tank after driving 3.5 hours. Pretty cool!
I toured the Great River Regional Solid Waste facilities - landfill, recycling facility, yard waste and more. I've known Wade, the guy who runs the facility for several years. He was with Christine, Wendy and me in DM for the trash conference when I had my first blowjob - (the shot, which is quite yummy)! Then I texted my college-aged daughter about it. Such a role model!
